School Programs

Built in the 1790s, Locust Grove is a unique setting for learning about the settlement of Kentucky and this region. Students will tour the house and grounds, studying life on a farm when Kentucky was "the West".

You can also explore the influence of Locust Grove’s most famous resident and founder of the city of Louisville, George Rogers Clark through a trip to this National Historic Landmark.

A variety of programs are offered for students of all ages. Some programs can be adapted for the needs of your curriculum.

INFORMATION:

Note to teachers and schools: Locust Grove has some funding available to help pay for bus transportation and in some cases admission fees for qualifying JCPS schools - please call and ask us. Qualifying schools have at least 50% of students eligible for free or reduced price lunch. (Thanks to a grant from the Louisville Metro Council!)

Cost:
$2 per child, except Craft Sampler, $3 per child. One adult chaperone for every ten children is admitted free; additional adults will pay the $4.00 adult group rate.

Size:
Maximum number of students is 65. Larger groups sometimes can be accommodated by request.

Eating:
Picnic tables are available outdoors. In cases of severe inclement weather, we will try to arrange indoor facilities if possible.

Shopping:
The museum store welcomes young shoppers. Prices begin at 5¢.


Program Descriptions:

Lucy’s Treasures
(Kindergarten through Second Grade)
A hands-on experience of 18th century life, including games and a a short tour of the house and grounds.

Pioneer Days (Third Grade and Up)
Our basic tour. Life on a Kentucky farm ca. 1800, touching on Croghan and Clark family histories. Includes an film appropriate to elementary grades, and tour of the house and grounds.

Craft Sampler (Second Grade and Up) - available mid-March - November
Pioneer Days tour enhanced with costumed demonstrations of cooking, weaving, and woodworking. Tour includes film, demonstrations and tour of house and grounds.

Work & Play (all ages) - available December - mid-March
Learn how children played in the 18th century, how they learned, and what kinds of work they did around a house like Locust Grove. Combines a tour of the house with hands-on activities in the auditorium.

History Tour (Middle School and Up)
The history of Locust Grove, the people associated with the site, including George Rogers Clark, and their impact on this region. Tour begins with a film appropriate for older students and includes the house and grounds.

Architecture (High School)
Early Kentucky architecture, especially Georgian, using Locust Grove and elements of construction as examples. Tour begins with a film and includes the house and grounds.

We can also take into account any special interests or topics your class might be studying.
